Harald Walkate

Aegon Asset Management

Harald Walkate has a longstanding interest in sustainability issues and has been specializing in responsible investment and ESG since 2009, when he joined Aegon Asset Management (AAM) as Head of the Corporate Office. In this role, Harald reported to the CEO of AAM and was involved in a variety of initiatives around strategy and governance, including the implementation of a Responsible Investment Framework.  In October 2011, Harald was appointed Head of Responsible Investment for AAM. Work on responsible investment has covered policy issues (including negative screening, stakeholder dialogues, NGO contacts),  engagement and voting processes, working with portfolio managers in the different AAM geographies to integrate ESG in investment decision making, and becoming a signatory to the PRI. In addition, Harald has advised internal clients (the Aegon insurance and pensions companies), as well as external clients, on matters related to responsible investment. Since 2013 Harald has increasingly focused on impact investment and has been working with portfolio managers and analysts in the company to identify impact investment opportunities within different asset classes.

To further impact investments made by insurance companies Harald founded Insurers’ Investors on Impact Investment (IIII), an informal network of asset management companies affiliated with insurance companies. Harald is regularly invited to speak at conferences and seminars on the topics of responsible investment, impact investment and social enterprise; Harald has spoken on these topics at events hosted by such organizations as the Harvard Kennedy School for Government, the University of Chicago Social Enterprise Institute, Institutional Investor, Responsible Investor and the Global Impact Investment Network (GIIN). A former corporate attorney with Allen & Overy, Harald also has significant experience in international business development (M&A, joint ventures, greenfields), in particular in the Central & Eastern European region, and holds a law degree (Leiden University, the Netherlands) and an MBA (University of Chicago – Booth School of Business). Harald holds a number of advisory and supervisory positions at non-profit organizations.
